Title of State Credential:
State of Minnesota General Educational Development (GED) Diploma
Am I eligible to take the GED Tests?
You are eligible to take the tests if you are not enrolled in and have not graduated
from high school - and you meet the requirements set by the State of Minnesota with
regard to age, the length of time since you left school, and residency.
What are the Minimum Age Requirements?
Age 19 as prescribed by Minnesota State Board of Education Rule 3500.3100.
Minimum age requirement may be waived under certain circumstances when
supporting documentation is submitted to and approved by the Minnesota
Department of Education.
Persons ages 16 and above who have not completed a high school diploma program
and are not currently enrolled in classes leading to a high school diploma may be
eligible to take the GED tests in Minnesota but may be required to submit an
Age Waiver Application form.
Contact GED Testing at 651-582-8445 and one will be mailed to you.
Circumstances that may warrant waiver of the minimum age requirement:
1. Applicant has been dropped from the school attendance rolls for at least 12
consecutive months
2. Applicant's high school class (the one in which he/she entered ninth grade)
has graduated.
3. Employer has indicated in writing on letterhead stationary that successful
completion of the GED test battery could result in the employment or
promotion of the applicant.
4. Applicant has applied for admission to a postsecondary educational
institution/financial aid and has been accepted pending the successful
completion of the GED test battery. (Written correspondence on letterhead
stationary from postsecondary institution required) .
5. The United States Armed Services has indicated in writing on letterhead
stationary that applicant will be accepted for enlistment once he/she has
successfully completed the GED test battery.
6. Adult Basic Education (ABE) or another recognized educational, social service
or correctional agency has indicated in writing on letterhead stationary that
successful completion of the GED test battery is a written part of the
applicant's personal educational plan AND that the applicant has passed three
of the five Official GED Practice Tests with scores of 500 or higher (individual
test scores required).
Residency Requirements
All examinees must be Minnesota residents. Under some circumstances, residents of
bordering states may take the GED tests in Minnesota. However, test scores are
sent back to the examinee's home state for processing and issuance of the
GED diploma.
