New Jersey GED Information
Who is Eligible to take the GED tests for the State of New Jersey?
The GED Tests are intended primarily for persons who, for any number of reasons, have missed their first opportunity to complete a high school program of instruction. In New Jersey, the GED Tests can be administered to state residents who:
- Have not graduated from an accredited high school or received a high school equivalency certificate or diploma.
- Are not currently enrolled in a regular high school.
- Are at least 16 years of age and out of school. Persons 16 or 17 years old must submit a Certificate of Consent to Participate signed, by a parent or legal guardian. If you have a legal guardian, you must bring a copy of the court document awarding guardianship.
- All GED candidates will need to show a primary identification and secondary identification at the time of test registration. The primary identification must be government-issued with a date of birth, photograph, New Jersey address, and signature. The secondary identification must be a document that verifies the government identification, including your name and address.There is no prior New Jersey residency requirement.
- If a GED applicant is not a citizen of the United States but they meet all of the above requirements, including age requirements and withdrawal from school a non-citizen may sit for the New Jersey GED.
- A person can also earn a GED credential in the State of New Jersey if they have a high school diploma from unaccredited high schools and meet the New Jersey requirements.
- They can also take the GED if they have earned diplomas in countries that do not participate in the GED testing program and meet the New Jersey requirements.
All GED candidates must provide valid identification at the time of registration and prior to admittance to the testing room.
- How to sign up for the GED Tests
- You must contact the Testing Center where you wish to take the GED tests to find out when the tests are scheduled and how to register for the tests.
A fee of $50.00 payable by money order made out to the local testing center at which the testing is to take place is required to take the tests. GED Tests may be taken no more than three times per section annually (January 1st though December 31st). A retest fee of $10 per section is required for those seeking re-examination in a specific section.
How to qualify for a New Jersey High School Diploma
There are four ways to qualify for a New Jersey State-endorsed High School Diploma:
- Take and successfully pass the GED by (1) earning the minimum passing score on each of the tests; and, (2) earning a total score of 225.
- Take and perform at a proficient or advanced proficient level of achievement in all sections of the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) starting in the 2002-2003 academic year, and present official college transcripts. These transcripts must show at least 30 general education credits leading to a degree at an accredited institution of higher education. Included in the 30 general education credits must be a minimum of 15 credits with at least three credits in each of the five general education categories as follows:A. CommunicationsB. MathematicsC. ScienceD. Social ScienceE. Humanities
Transfer out-of-state GED scores to New Jersey. If you took the GED tests outside of New Jersey or while in military service, you may apply to New Jersey for acceptance of your GED scores to qualify for a New Jersey state-endorsed high school diploma. New Jersey passing score requirements will apply. You must meet the New Jersey eligibility requirements.
